Almonds Lane, Stevenage

Rebuilding after a fire

Following a fire at a property owned by Stevenage Borough Council, significant damage was caused to its exterior wall.

The three-bedroom house on Almonds Lane is situated on the end of a terrace, with rendered facades to the front and rear. In contrast, the side of the property was finished with a brick effect render.

It was the side wall that sustained the most damage, with the fire destroying the insulation behind the render. This meant that the external wall insulation (EWI) system on that wall had to be completely reconstructed.

Wates Living Space, which was the main contractor for Stevenage Borough Council on this job, asked Milton Keynes-based Thermoclad to carry out the repair work.

As specialists in EWI, render and cladding, the team at Thermoclad were familiar with Saint-Gobain Weber products. One product they hadn’t used before was weberwall brick, but, having spoken to Weber’s specification manager Julian Still, they decided it was ideal for this project. It would give the same finish as the brick effect render and remain in keeping with surrounding properties, which was important to Stevenage Borough Council.

Having re-installed an identical EWI system, the Thermoclad team fitted 55m2 of weberwall brick in Rustic Red Multi with Grey pointing mortar to complete the repair work. The lightweight weberwall brick effect panels were much quicker and easier to install than traditional brick slips, with each sheet containing the equivalent of 20 brick faces.

The repair work carried out at the Almonds Lane property was completed in one week in October 2022.
