How to lay large format floor tiles

Level the floor

If necessary, level the area to be tiled with a fibre-reinforced floor screed. weberfloor flex is a quick-drying floor leveller which offers extra flexibility for use on most interior floor substrates.

Prime the surface

Before tiling, prime the surface with weber PR360 to regulate the porosity and ensure adequate adhesion. Refer to the product information to establish the correct dilution for your substrate.

Measure the water and add the correct ratio of primer. Apply the diluted primer to the surface and brush in. Wait 20-30 minutes or until dry.

Laying the tiles

Measure the tile including the spacer and ensure the spacer is used when measuring both the length and width. Apply a guideline for reference.

Check boxes of tiles for calibre and shade before mixing boxes to create a good blend of colour and pattern.  Inspect each tile for damage or excessive bowing. Find the directional arrow for orientation (if applicable) and mark out the first tile and begin the adhesive process.

For large format tiles, we advise using a flexible tile adhesive which can withstand the associated movement from foot traffic, such as weberset SPF or weberset pro lite - rapid.

Measure the correct water addition for your tile adhesive or mix by volume. Both are detailed on the bag. Mix mechanically until a smooth, even paste has been achieved. Apply the adhesive to the primed floor and use a notched trowel to create a ribbed adhesive layer. Butter the back of the tile before fixing, this will aid adhesion and reduce dust.

Tapping down with a rubber mallet will help to bed the tile into the adhesive.

It is good practice to lift the occasional tile to check adhesive coverage and ensure the tile is fully bedded.  Visible ribs in the adhesive would indicate lack of coverage whilst good coverage is indicated by peaks forming in adhesive.  Add more adhesive if required to ensure full coverage.

Use a tile levelling system

Using clips such as the GLS Wedge Levelling System will aid installation and ensure a level finish. Measure out between 50-100mm lengthways from the edge of the tile. Apply the Levelling Base to the measured area. Insert the Levelling Wedge to the Levelling Base and use your hands or Application Tool to secure tight.

Lay the tiles to a maximum 25-33% bond, never lay 50% brick bond to avoid lippage. The GLS Wedge Levelling System will ensure a level floor and consistent grout lines. To remove the levelling system, knock the wedges off with a mallet along the grout line.

Apply grout and silicone

Measure the correct water addition for the volume of grout being mixed. Add the powder gently and mix mechanically to form a smooth paste. Leave to stand for 2 minutes and then mix one more time. Do not re-wet or over-water the mixture.

Apply liberally with a grout float and smooth into joints. When the grout is firm in the joints, clean the tiles (approximately after 15-30 minutes), do not use excessive water.

Finish the job with weberjoint silicone sealant around the edges. Available in a range of 19 colours matched to our weberjoint premium grout.
