Why choose external wall insulation?

Why choose external wall insulation?

When it comes to improving the thermal efficiency of your home you've got numerous options available to you. From new windows and doors to various insulation options, it can be difficult to choose the right one for your home.

Choosing the right upgrades

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution to make your home more thermally efficient and minimise heat loss.

For example, if you were thinking about a more efficient boiler you must first consider how well insulated your home is to avoid heat escaping through the walls, floors, and roof.

Likewise, you may consider upgrading your windows and doors, but swapping them out for more modern, energy efficient options won’t make a massive difference unless your current windows are poorly sealed, and have been identified as a problem area. Unfortunately, if the majority of the heat loss is through the walls or the roof, upgrading the windows is unlikely to do very much at all.

What kind of savings could you make?

Insulation is one of the best ways to improve the thermal efficiency of your home, minimising the amount of heat which is lost through weak spots in your home’s construction. As an added bonus it will also impact on the cost of your heating bills, with annual savings of between £105 and £375 according to research by the Energy Saving Trust.

Transform the appearance of your home

Applied to the outer skin of your home, it forms a shell around the existing house, keeping the cold out and the heat in (and vice versa in the hot summer months). As an added bonus you can use it as an excuse to upgrade the exterior of your home with a choice of colours and textured finishes – you can even get a brick-effect finish, so don’t let the thought of losing your brickwork hold you back.

Take a more in-depth look at the benefits of EWI

More internal space and less disruption during renovation

So why go for EWI over loft or cavity wall insulation? Well the reality is, not all homes are suitable for all types of retrofit systems. If your home is one of 8.5 million in the UK rated as ‘hard to treat’, an external system is the ideal solution. You also won’t lose any of your inside space like you would if you insulated your walls internally, and as all the work takes place outside there’s much less disruption for you during the renovation.
