Showcasing weberwall brick for social housing

Weber UK

weberwall brick has been used as the preferred finish for several social housing developments across the Midlands. Factory fitted to a timber panel system, the brick slips can be installed precisely without being delayed by the British weather.

As a lightweight solution, weberwall brick allows 20 bricks to be installed at a time – making it three times faster to install than traditional brick slip systems. This makes it ideal for supporting the speed and efficiency of modern methods of construction (MMC).

Oxford Road, Daventry

The homes in Daventry - built by Excelsior Land Ltd on behalf of housing and social care provider GreenSquareAccord – are spread between two blocks, each containing 11 apartments with a mix of one and two bedrooms.

This was the first development in the UK to use weberwall brick on a timber panel system. Having previously tried an alternative brick slip system that was heavier, took longer to apply, and suffered delamination, the decision was made to switch to weberwall brick.

The factory fitted brick slip had to deliver value for the client. This included speed of construction and quality, as well as brick colour options to satisfy the various planning requirements from local planning authorities. To enhance the procurement process, Antique Red was specified from the standard colour range.

London Road, Kirton

Housing association Platform Housing Group created 41 affordable energy-efficient homes in Kirton, Lincolnshire.

The development, comprising a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom homes, includes six bungalows built to meet the Future Homes Standard – a first for Platform Housing Group.

To provide the desired appearance of traditional brick, weberwall brick in two bespoke colours were chosen for different house types.

All panels were finished with weberwall brick pointing mortar in Cotswold to align with local aesthetics and planning requirements.

The systems incorporated high-performance features like triple glazing, PV panels, and air source heat pumps, achieving impressive U-values of 0.25W/m²K and 0.15W/m²K respectively.

GreenSquareAccord’s Canalside Close development provides one- and two-bedroom apartments alongside houses with two and three bedrooms, totalling 33 affordable homes.

Completed in June 2024, it repurposed underused industrial land in partnership with Keon Homes, Low Carbon Living Homes and Walsall Council.

All the properties were built using an off-site closed timber panel system, which also holds the NHBC-accepted Buildmark warranty. They were finished with weberwall brick in shades Antique Red and Antique Buff.

Springvale, Wolverhampton

Also created by GreenSquareAccord is Springvale – a £3m development on the site of a former office building in Bilston.

It consists of a total of 24 one- and two-bedroom apartments for affordable rent and is part of the housing provider’s wider £15.8m investment in the area to build 143 new affordable homes in the town.

The second phase of regeneration in the area – situated next to the existing development – is transforming a disused part of Springvale Sports and Social Club house to provide a further 57 new affordable homes.

Contracts manager Peter Chester said: “I have loved using weberwall brick on these panels. It has saved us so much time and money.

“Each lorry delivers four panels, and it only takes about three days to install a full lift. Thanks to the MMC panels, we had the external walls up to the second storey within two weeks, which is significantly quicker than traditional methods.

“We wouldn’t have been able to progress the programme as quickly as we did without MMC. Our site prelims cost around £10,000 per week, so finishing 10 weeks earlier than we would with traditional construction saves £100,000.

“We’ve avoided all the typical delays and complications that can come with bricklayers on site. The efficiency and reliability of this method have made a real difference.”

An added bonus is that residents can be housed in their new homes and feel the benefits of a more energy efficient property a lot sooner.
