Our sustainability journey so far

Our pledge to sustainability

Back in July, we posted an update about our pledge to sustainability and the types of areas we’ll be focusing on as a business to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

We’re pleased to announce various actions have already taken place across our target pillars of Carbon & Climate, Resources & Circularity, and Health & Wellbeing:

Carbon & Climate

This pillar focuses on increasing our energy efficiency and use of renewable energies, as well as reducing our embodied carbon emissions.

Achieved so far:

  • In 2021, we introduced fully electric or hybrid company cars
  • 100% of our electricity in Great Britain now comes from renewable sources
  • We’ve installed low wattage LED lighting in our Flitwick factory saving approximately 179 tonnes of CO2 per year
  • We attained ISO 14001 accreditation for environmental management systems

Not to mention that we supply external wall insulation systems which thermally insulate hard-to-treat properties which minimise heat loss and therefore create more sustainable homes.

In future, we’ll be looking to change our Flitwick FLT fleet from gas to electric, install low energy lighting across all sites, and further reduce our CO2 emissions.

Resources & Circularity

This pillar focuses on reducing use of non-renewable resources, reducing our freshwater consumption, increasing lifetime and use rate, and reducing the amount of non-recovered construction and demolition waste.

Achieved so far:

  • Zero waste to landfill from our plants in Great Britain
  • 84% raw materials are sourced locally to reduce carbon footprint
  • 100% of printed marketing materials are printed on recycled or FCS paper

In future, we’ll be increasing the amount of raw materials sourced from recycled or waste sources, plastic packaging will contain 30% recycled content as a minimum, and we will provide environmental product declaration (EPDs) for all key product groups.

Health & Wellbeing

This pillar focuses on developing products that enrich lives and support good health & wellbeing. It focuses on reducing business travel by adopting new ways of working, and promotes mental health and wellbeing.

Achieved so far:

  • We appointed sustainability champions to fully embed a culture of sustainability throughout everything we do
  • Won the national ‘Employee Benefit Award’ for best healthcare and wellbeing benefits in 2019
  • Partnered with the Supply Chain Sustainability School
  • ISO 45001 accredited for occupational health and safety
  • Trained mental health first aiders around the business

Moving forwards, we will look at internal sustainability training courses that will be carried out by all staff, implement new ways of working to reduce business travel, and implement free health checks for all employees.

Looking ahead to Net Zero

At Weber, we care about building better for people and the planet, and this update just includes some of the things we have and will be doing to improve our efforts towards a net zero carbon future.
