SkillBuild 2023 Winner - Plastering and Drylining

SkillBuild is the largest multi-trade skills competition in the UK for construction trainees and apprentices, exhibiting the variety of skills and career opportunities available within the industry.

Competitors worked across the three days completing a complex project designed by an expert panel of judges.

When setting the project for the Plastering  category, lead judge Colin McCaughey said he took into consideration what students learn as part of their qualification.

The Weber module involved applying monocouche to the wall, adding a plinth detail and creating decorative bands around the door.

Weber application manager Curtis Johnston is a previous SkillBuild and WorldSkills Finalist and was a judge for the third time at this year’s event. He has been plastering for nine years now and believes that his achievements in these competitions have made a huge difference in his career.

Weber has sponsored the Plastering and Finishes category of the national SkillBuild competition for the sixth consecutive year. By sponsoring, Weber supplies competitors with materials and equipment to use to complete their projects.

In addition to this, Weber has run regular training courses at its own Technical Academy in Flitwick, Bedfordshire. Since 2014, a qualified and award-winning team who are fully committed to helping combat the skills shortage within the industry has been delivering training, and they have recently launched a new initiative to bring courses to other regions using a network of colleges and academies across the country.
