Cathodic protection

Impressed current cathodic protection can control corrosion, counteract the incipient anode effect, and can reduce the amount of concrete removal. Our range of special low resistivity conductive mortars can be used as overlays and for repairs in conjunction with professionally designed cathodic protection systems.

Cathodic protection problems and solutions

BS EN 1504 Principle 10 is concerned with cathodic protection of the concrete structure. This is appropriate where chloride contamination is significant or carbonation has reached the reinforcement resulting in a high risk of corrosion. Impressed current cathodic protection applied in accordance to EN 12696 can control corrosion, counteract the incipient anode effect, and can limit the amount of concrete removal.

1. Significant chloride contamination

Concrete is contaminated due to chlorides, leading to reinforcement corrosion and spalled concrete.

2. Extensive carbonation

Extensive carbonation of concrete occurs due to low concrete cover and carbon dioxide (CO₂) diffusion, leading to reinforcement corrosion.

3. Corroded steel

Steel sections become corroded within encased concrete, causing reinforcement corrosion and spalled concrete.

Solutions

Methods of protection based upon the BS EN 1504 Principle 10 is the use of the following: 10:1 Applying electrical potential.

Note: Protection should be carried out by cathodic protection experts involving design to optimise the long-term effectiveness of the system.

1. Concrete repair

Use cathodic protection grade repair mortar or concrete, such as webercem mortar CP or webercem advanced repair concrete CP.

2. Concrete repair

Use cathodic protection grade sprayed concrete or repair concrete, such as webercem spray CP or webercem advanced repair concrete CP.

3. Recasting concrete

Recast concrete around the steel section with cathodic protection grade repair concrete, such as webercem advanced repair concrete CP.
